What Is Regenerative Medicine?

Regenerative Medicine

Schedule A Consultation

Regenerative Medicine involves an injection of concentrated growth factors or stem cells in an attempt to regenerate and heal damaged tissues. This can include damage in joints or spine. Regenerative Medicine therapies include cells that come from either your own body, or acquired regenerative compounds that are specially prepared and injected into the identified damaged joint or spine.

Regenerative Medicine is performed as an outpatient procedure. Regenerative Medicine products can be obtained from either the patient or from an external source. Here at KC Pain Centers, we offer a wide range of options depending on patient selection, their needs, and the physician’s recommendations.

Regenerative Medicine is not “pixie dust”. Injecting platelet rich plasma (PRP) or stem cells does not magically make a tissue regenerate. How long does the treatment last? What are the 5 year outcomes? Is it better than a placebo? These are all questions that can’t be answered yet. There is some data on PRP in regards to joint injections and the results look encouraging. However these are only case report/case studies, on at most a couple hundred patients. The Regenerative Medicine techniques used at KC Pain Centers are at the forefront of cutting edge technology, but they have not been proven by extensive research either.

Is Regenerative Medicine the Right Choice for You?

Regenerative Medicine could be an option for those patients who have persistent pain despite trying conservative measures (for example, physical therapy, icing the injury, rest, medications, and conventional injection therapy). Regenerative Medicine could also be an option for those patients battling chronic pain who may not want to undergo surgery.

Doctors at KC Pain Centers realize and respect that Regenerative Medicine is cutting edge therapy which also means that there is not a standard of care established as of yet.

KC Pain Centers will never claim that Regenerative Medicine will provide a cure or is the answer for every condition. Before proceeding with any type of injection using stem cells or PRP, a shared decision will be made between the patient and their KC Pain Center’s Doctor.

If you are considering Regenerative Medicine it is important to remember this is a new frontier of medical treatments and there is no guarantee it will work or be right for you.

Which Type(s) of Cells Do You Use?

There are two classifications of stem cell therapies that we utilize at KC Pain:

These are cells that come from one’s own body, like cells from a person’s bone marrow, adipose, and PRP.

These are cells from a donor to a recipient. These cells include exosomes containing RNA, amniotic and umbilical cord derived cells.

What Are The
Next Steps?

Before any treatment there will be an initial consultation to discuss whether regenerative medicine is the right approach for you. Regenerative Medicine treatments such as bone marrow aspirate concentrate, fat (adipose) derived therapies, and PRP injections have been proven to be safe with a low complication rate; however they are not covered by insurance. As part of your consultation, we will complete a physical evaluation and review of your medical records. The chances of achieving a successful outcome increase through patient selection and patient education.
